Thin and flowing fabrics, such as silk or silk chiffon, must be stabilized on the cutting surface. The easiest and most affordable trick to solve this problem is a soft backing.

You will need a soft and heavy cloth, bedspread or tablecloth, which will cover the entire cutting surface of the table.

Material in gravity, density and softness should look like a terry towel.

It is better not to use a towel for such purposes, since there is a high probability of hooking and even cutting a loop-like surface.

In this workshop, a cotton blanket folded in half was used.

How to determine real silk or fake?

Step 1

Cover the table surface. If necessary, pre-iron it.

Step 2

Place silk chiffon on top of the bedspread just like you lay out any other fabric, such as cotton, linen, for cutting.

Fabric align.

Little trick!

If the chiffon or thin silk “bubbles” slightly, this is especially noticeable and often happens when the material is doubled, do not smooth the surface with your hands. Gently blow these “bubbles” towards the edge or cut. The fabric will line up.

How to avoid shifting when knitting silk parts

Step 3

Place the details of the paper pattern on the silk chiffon in accordance with the layout plan or fabric pattern.

Step 4

Pin the paper parts with tailor pins and start cutting.

Important!

When working with thin silk and silk chiffon, use tailor pins for silk and special scissors for cutting delicate fabrics.
